Why mastering marketing might be a waste of time

Mastering Marketing

Both Robert Greene in his book "The Mastery" and Ryan Holiday in "Perennial Seller" write that if yo want to become a master of your craft, you have to spend at least 10,000 hours working on it.

10k hours is a lot of training. You probably know, since in your profession you need to not only acquire the education, but also gain practical experience to be certified and obtain your license. That’s a very time consuming process. In addition to that, you need to build up your reputation with professional experience. We can both agree that it takes time, effort and energy.

Now, besides this professional investment, as a business owner, you need to learn how to market yourself and that is the truth of our day and age. It is in your best interest to let people know about the type of work that you do and how it can improve their lives. The problem is, that there are so many tools and tactics out there and all of them take time to learn and integrate into your strategy.

I can tell you, as a Marketer, that mastering marketing is also a very time consuming process. It can take hours out of your workday to figure out what you will be posting on Instagram for the week. This in turn will take you away from your craft, the thing you wanted to master in the first place, and your work may suffer.

There are different solutions to that. You can hire an assistant, dedicated to promoting your businesses. This is a great option if you are on the same page with that person about how you want to present yourself to the world. It can also be quite costly.

Another solution can be working with a marketer that can help you with your marketing strategy, provide useful information on tools and tactics and prepare a detailed plan to act on.

The last, and my least favorite solution, is spending time learning about marketing tools on your own and trying to incorporate them to bring new clients. It is my least favorite, because it will waste a lot of your time that you can spend on actually helping people by doing what you do best. But if you love learning about marketing, go for it! You can find a lot of useful information out there.

Your time is valuable and your educated and informed opinion is much too necessary to your clients, to be thinking about which marketing YouTube video to watch. Instead, you can decide to spend more time doing what you love.
