How to Turn Your Summer Slump into Your Most Productive Time of The Year


The dreaded summer slump time is upon us. June is moving fast and so are your clients with their summer plans, kids activities and traveling. It might seem like the slowing down of your business is inevitable and that marketing your services might be a waste of your energy, but I am here to tell you that it's the perfect time for you to work on your business.


Even though your regular appointments might start dwindling a little, this is not the time to slow down. This is the time to set new goals, work on a marketing plan and adjust your services. More about service adjustments further bellow.


In one of my older posts, breaking bad marketing habits, I mentioned the importance of setting goals for the new year.

When I started researching goal setting, I was surprised to discover that according to the research by the University of Scranton, 92% of people who set goals don't achieve them. The 8% who do achieve goals, spend more time setting a strategy and an execution plan.

I am bringing this up because when your calendar clears up a little, it creates a natural space for reevaluating what you want to achieve and set new goals.


The beginning of summer is a great time to do that. This time can also allow you to carefully plan your marketing and test new things.

While mental health issues don't usually go away during the summer, people's lifestyles can drastically change. Your clients might have less free time to see a therapist or simply less money to invest in their mental health. It is up to you to understand what goes on in their lives so you can serve their needs better.


Here is how you can start preparing yourself to the potential changes in your schedule:

  1. Start by asking your clients if they are planning to keep seeing you during the summer months.

  2. If they are not sure about their availability, ask what you could do to make it easier for them to see you.

  3. Try to really understand what can prevent them from keeping an appointment with you.

  4. Think about a solution to this possible obstacle.

  5. Reflect on how you can adjust your schedule or diversify your services. While your client might not have the time to see you in person, they might be completely open to talking to you on video.

Another way to eliminate your summer slump is to go after a completely different type of client than you usually see. You can create a new Ideal Client's Profile for summer only.

This will help you understand what kind of person you want to reach and develop a new message to attract new clients during the summer months. These new clients may turn into long term relationships for you and help you naturally grow your business.

The last option is to just take this time to recharge, and set your marketing strategy and a promotional campaign for September so you can end the year on a high note. So often we are buried in our daily activities that we don't get the opportunity to lift our heads up and see the big picture. This is your time to do just that.

So I am asking you to pause right now, and spend the next 30 minutes thinking about what you really want from your business this summer. You don't have to accept the summer slump as an inevitable fact of life. You will be surprised at how spending the time thinking about what you can do instead, will give you new ideas to spend your summer months.
